Up until the illegal knee in the first fight that cost him the belt, Yan had been in control of the bout.

- Petr Yan lands 5.98 significant strikes per minute (Sterling 4.84)

Head To Head
- Aljamain Sterling beat Petr Yan by Disqualification in Round 4 in March 2021 (illegal knee)
Aljamain Sterling Form
Aljamain Sterling is on a six-fight win streak as he makes his first defence of the bantamweight title.
Sterling last lost in December 2017 when he was knocked out by Marlon Moraes in the first round.
He bounced back with a decision win over Brett Johns before submitting Cody Stamann in the second round.
‘Funk Master’ then extended his streak to four fights with unanimous decision wins over Jimmie Rivera and Pedro Munhoz.
Sterling made it five-in-a-row a year later when he took less than 90 seconds to submit Cory Sandhagen.
That win ultimately earned him a shot at the bantamweight belt and he did become a UFC champion as the first attempt.
However, it was in unsatisfactory fashion as an illegal knee from Yan resulted in the fight being stopped in the fourth round.
Sterling was awarded the title by disqualification and saw his professional record improve to 20-3, with two wins by KO/TKO and eight by submission.
Of his three career losses, one has come by strikes and the other two have been by decision.
Petr Yan Form
Petr Yan has gone 8-1 in the UFC as he looks to become bantamweight champion for a second time.
The 29-year-old Russian arrived in the UFC in June 2018 and embarked on a six-fight win streak to surge into title contention.
He registered the biggest win of his career in December 2019 when he knocked out the legendary Urijah Faber with a head kick.
That secured a fight with Jose Aldo for the vacant bantamweight title in July 2020.
Yan emerged from that bout as the new champion thanks to a fifth-round knockout of former featherweight champion Aldo.
However, he failed to manage a single successful defence of the bantamweight crown.
Yan was on top in his first defence against Aljamain Sterling, but a serious lapse in concentration saw him hit the challenger with an illegal knee in the fourth round.
Sterling was unable to continue, and that meant Yan was disqualified and lost the title.
He rebounded in October of last year though, besting Cory Sandhagen over five rounds to take his pro record to 16-2.
He has seven KO/TKO wins and one submission success on his record, while his two losses have come by decision and DQ respectively.
Verdict
It took an inexplicable mistake from Yan to hand Sterling the title in the first meeting.
Yan is unlikely to make such a huge mistake in the rematch.
