Gennady Golovkin is stepping inside the ring for the first time since December 2020 and is looking for a fourth straight win.
Golovkin’s perfect record suffered a minor blemish in September 2017 when he went to a split decision draw with Canelo Alvarez.
When the two men met again a year later, Alvarez had his hand raised via majority decision after another 12 rounds.
That was the first defeat of Golovkin’s professional career, but he has bounced back since that loss.
‘GGG’ returned to winning ways when he knocked out Steve Rolls inside four rounds in June 2019.
He then made it back-to-back wins by besting Sergiy Derevyanchenko over 12 rounds four months later.
The now 40-year-old then made it three-in-a-row when Kamil Szeremeta retired after the seventh round in December 2020.
That victory left Golovkin with a 41-1-1 professional record, with 36 wins coming via stoppage.
Ryota Murata Form
Ryota Murata has won each of his last two fights and is now looking to record the biggest win of his career.
The Japanese fighter lost for the first time in his career in May 2017 when he dropped a split decision to Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam.
He avenged that loss several months later when N’Jikam retired after seven rounds.
Murata followed up that victory with an eight-round stoppage of Emanuele Blandamura, but he failed to make it three-in-a-row.
The 36-year-old suffered the second defeat of his career when he lost a unanimous decision to Rob Brant.
But just like his first loss, Murata went for immediate revenge and got it by stopping Brant in the second round.
He then followed that up with a fifth-round knockout of Steven Butler in December 2019, but he has not fought since then.
That means Murata goes into this fight with a 16-2 record, with 13 wins coming via stoppage.
Verdict
Ryota Murata may be a world champion, but he has fought nobody and has two losses.
Gennady Golovkin may be past his best, but he is backed to still have more than enough to win here.
