Letting AJ McCarron go was a questionable move, but this is still a talented group and they should have enough to see off a Houston team who are likely to again struggle on offense.

St Louis Battlehawks enter the 2025 season looking to bounce back from a disappointing end to the last campaign.
The Battlehawks went 7-3 in the inaugural UFL regular season to book their place in the playoffs.
With the UFL Championship Game scheduled to take place at the Dome in St Louis, they knew they would have home advantage if they won the XFL Conference Championship.
St Louis were paired with a San Antonio team they had beaten twice in the regular season, but they failed to complete a hat-trick of wins over the Brahmas.
Despite having home field advantage, the Battlehawks suffered a surprise 25-15 defeat as they missed out on the championship game.
Houston Roughnecks Form
Houston go into the new season looking to improve on a miserable debut campaign that saw them win just one of their 10 UFL games.
The Roughnecks were one of the best teams in the XFL in 2023, but following the merger with the USFL the team itself was shelved.
Instead the existing USFL Gamblers team was rebranded as the Roughnecks, keeping much of the coaching staff and roster that had gone 5-5 in the USFL the year before.
Houston’s fortunes under the new branding did not improve in 2024; instead getting worse.
The Roughnecks managed just one regular season win and ended the campaign on a six-game losing skid.
Verdict
AJ McCarron’s exit has certainly left some question marks surrounding the St Louis offense, but this is still a better team than Houston.
The Roughnecks were appalling last season and may not be much better this time around, so we are siding with the Battlehawks on opening night.
