The Capitals opened the season at home and failed to score a single goal as they suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Pittsburgh.
They rebounded with a shootout victory over Calgary, but that was followed up by three more defeats.
Washington suffered a 6-1 blow-out defeat in Ottawa, before heading to Montreal for a 3-2 overtime defeat to the Canadiens.
The Capitals returned home for last night's meeting with Toronto, but they could not turn around their slump as they lost 4-1.

New Jersey return home looking to build on last night's victory in Montreal that improved them to 3-1-1.
The Devils came into the new season as one of the front-runners to lift the Stanley Cup.
They got off to a winning start by beating Detroit 4-3 at home, but they failed to build on that as they lost the next two games.
New Jersey suffered a shootout defeat at the hands of Arizona, and then saw a three-goal fightback come up short as they were beaten 4-3 by Florida.
The Devils did manage to stop the rot last Friday though, beating the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime, and they then backed that up with a 5-2 win in Montreal on Tuesday.
Verdict
New Jersey are the better team in better form, so we expect them to come out on top in this one.
