They then moved within one win of clinching as they travelled to Ottawa to record a 3-2 victory in overtime.
Toronto have failed to complete the job though, following up a 4-3 overtime loss on the road with a 4-0 home defeat to the Senators.
The Maple Leafs secured their place in the playoffs by compiling a 52-26-4 regular-season record to finish atop the Atlantic Division standings.
Ottawa Senators Form
Ottawa return home having resurrected their postseason campaign with back-to-back wins over Toronto.
The Senators looked to be making a quick exit from the playoffs when they lost the first three games of this series with Toronto.

The Senators earned their place in the playoffs by putting together a 45-30-7 record to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division standings.
Verdict
Ottawa remain on the brink of elimination, but momentum is firmly on their side.
Couple that with a good recent record against a Toronto team, and they make for an appealing pick against a Maple Leafs team who will be feeling extremely nervous.
