Montreal cooled off to lose the next three, 5-2 to Ottawa, 1-0 to Toronto in overtime and 4-3 to Chicago via a shootout, but they snapped that skid with a 4-2 victory over Carolina in their regular season finale though.
The Canadiens failed to make it back-to-back wins though, as they lost 3-2 in overtime to Washington in the first game of this series.

Washington earned their place in the postseason by compiling a 51-22-9 record to finish top of the Metropolitan Division.
The Capitals ended the regular season on an underwhelming run of form though, as they won just four of their final 12 games.
They lost three straight games to end March, but they showed some improvement in early April as they won three of their first five games of the month.
Washington then lost back-to-back meetings with Columbus, 7-0 on the road at 4-1 at home, before failing to back up 3-1 win over the New York Islanders as they lost 5-2 in Pittsburgh.
The Capitals issued an immediate response in their playoff opener though, beating Montreal 3-2 in overtime.

Washington are the team in better form and they have had Montreal’s number this season.
