Canada Form

Canada are just one win away from a return to the Ice Hockey World Championship Final, having recorded their eighth consecutive win on Friday.

The Maple Leafs, who won this tournament a year ago, got off to a solid start as the beat Great Britain 4-2 and Denmark 5-1 in their opening two games.

They were made to work for a 7-6 overtime win against Austria, before downing Norway 4-1 and pulling away late to beat Finland 5-3.

Canada then recorded a 3-2 win over semi-final opponents Switzerland, before wrapping up the group stage with a 4-3 overtime victory against the Czech Republic.

That set up a quarter-final clash with Slovakia, in which the Maple Leafs made a fast start and never looked back as they won 6-3.

Switzerland Form

Switzerland have a shot at avenging their only defeat of the tournament so far, having won for the seventh time in eight games.

The Swiss, who exited in the quarter-finals a year ago, opened the tournament with five straight wins, starting with a 5-2 victory over Norway and a 6-5 success against Austria.

They then edged the Czech Republic via a shootout, before shutting out Great Britain and Denmark in 3-0 and 8-0 wins respectively.

Switzerland’s streak was finally ended by a 3-2 defeat to Canada, but they bounced back to close out the group stage with a 3-1 win over Finland.

The Swiss then booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory against Germany, meaning no matter what happens here they will have bettered their 2023 performance.

Verdict

Canada are building up steam and looked sharp in the quarter-final win over Slovakia.

They have already beaten Switzerland in this tournament too, so we expect the Maple Leafs to move one step closer to defending their crown.
