The Tigers went 10-3 last time around, with defeats in three of their four games against ranked teams proving costly.
They opened with a 45-24 defeat to Florida State, but rebounded with three consecutive victories before falling to another ranked team, Ole Miss, 55-49.
LSU answered with their only win over a ranked team in 2023, beating Missouri 49-39, only to then lose 42-28 when they visited Alabama in early November.
The Tigers responded with three straight wins to wrap up their regular season schedule, and then took their streak to four games with a 35-31 success against Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
USC Form
USC come into the new season looking to improve on a 2023 campaign that saw them go 7-5 in the regular season.
The Trojans’ offense, led by Caleb Williams, repeatedly put up plenty of points, but defensive issues proved to be their undoing during the second half of the season.
They opened up the campaign with a six-game win streak, but saw that run end with a 48-20 defeat at Notre Dame.
That proved to be the start of a run of five defeats win in six games, with USC’s only victory being a 50-49 victory over California.
The Trojans lost to four ranked teams during that sequence, but a 42-28 win over Louisville in the Holiday Bowl meant they managed one victory over a top-25 school in 2023.
Verdict
Both teams have new quarterbacks leading the way so there are question marks surrounding both teams.
However, the biggest question mark surrounds a USC defense that repeatedly got gashed in 2023, so we are leaning towards LSU in this one.
