Alabama finished the regular season with a 9-3 record, narrowly missing out on a place in the College Football Playoffs.
The Crimson Tide won their first four games of the season, including a thrilling 41-34 victory when they hosted Georgia, but stumbled in October.
They lost twice in a three-game spell, sandwiching a 27-25 win at South Carolina with a shock 40-35 defeat at Vanderbilt and a 24-17 loss in Tennessee.
Alabama rebounded with a couple of wins over ranked teams, only for a 24-3 defeat at Oklahoma to ultimately cost them a place in the playoffs.
The Crimson Tide did close out the regular season on a positive note though, beating Auburn 28-14.
Michigan Form
Michigan’s defense of the national championship never got going, as they finished the regular season with a 7-5 record.
The Wolverines lost their head coach and several key talent following their success last January, and they were unable to overcome those losses.
Having already lost in non-conference play, they suffered four defeats in the space of five Big Ten games to miss out on the conference championship and the playoffs.
During this rough run Michigan lost 27-17 at Washington, 21-7 in Illinois, 38-17 to Oregon and 20-15 at Indiana.
The Wolverines did end the regular season with a couple of wins though, following up a 50-6 blowout of Northwestern with a 13-10 victory at bitter rivals Ohio State.
