Miami suffered only their second defeat in their last nine games as the dropped Game 3 to a last-gasp shot.
The Heat ended the regular season on a 6-1 run and made a strong start to this playoff series with a 115-91 blowout of Atlanta.
They then took firm hold of the series with a 115-105 victory in the second matchup.
Miami failed to make it three-in-a-row though, as Trae Young sank a late-game floater to inflict a 111-110 defeat on the Heat.
Tyler Herro led Miami in scoring off the bench as he combined 24 points with seven rebounds.
Jimmy Butler had 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a double double.
Bam Adebayo also notched a double double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Max Strus put up 20 points for the Heat.
Atlanta Hawks Form
Atlanta have a chance to level the series after a huge home win in Game 3.
The Hawks booked their place in the postseason with Play-In wins over Charlotte and Cleveland.
Their good form was halted by a 115-91 blowout defeat in Miami in Game 1, and they then dropped the second game, 115-105.
Atlanta responded in their first home game of the series though, as Trae Young’s late basket snatched a 111-110 win.
Young ended the game with 24 points and eight assists, while De’Andre Hunter chipped in with 17.
Bogdan Bogdanovic had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a solid display.
It was a real team effort though, with no less than six players scoring 11 points or more in the win.
Verdict
Miami may have lost on Friday night, but they have had Atlanta’s number for much of this season.
The Heat are backed to hit back and take a 3-1 lead back to Florida for Game 5.
