Leon Edwards vs Sean Brady Preview & Picks

Sean Brady is tipped to grind out a decision win over the former champion.

Brady is a very similar fighter to Belal Muhammad, who dominated and beat Leon Edwards.

He has the skills to follow that blueprint and take down Edwards repeatedly to earn the win.

  • 9 of Sean Brady’s 17 career wins have been on points
  • Leon Edwards has gone the distance in 7 of his last 9 fights
  • 3 of Leon Edwards’ 4 defeats have been by decision

Leon Edwards Form

Leon Edwards is a former UFC welterweight champion with a career record of 22-4 (7 KOs, 3 Subs) with 1 No Contest.

Edwards lost his UFC debut back in November 2014 and went just 2-2 during his first four fights with the promotion.

However, a unanimous decision win over Dominic Waters in May 2016 proved to be the start of his rise to the very top of the weight class.

‘Rocky’ then submitted Albert Tumenov, before recording decision wins over Vicente Luque and Bryan Barberena.

Edwards followed up those wins by knocking out Peter Sobotta, and then claiming points victories over Donald Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson and Rafael dos Anjos.

His win streak was finally ended by No Contest with Belal Muhammad, but he issued an immediate response with a decision win over Nate Diaz, earning himself a title shot.

The 33-year-old shocked the world by knocking out Kamaru Usman with less than a minute to go, and in the rematch the following year he beat the Nigerian again, this time by majority decision.

Edwards made one more successful defence of the welterweight title, beating Colby Covington by decision, before he was dethroned by a points loss to Belal Muhammad.

Sean Brady Form

Sean Brady is the #5 ranked welterweight contender with a professional record of 17-1 (3 KOs, 5 Subs).

Brady signed with the UFC in 2019 following a successful run on the minor scene that saw him win the Cage Fury FC welterweight title.

He enjoyed a winning debut as he beat Court McGee on points, and he then backed that up with a decision victory over Ismail Naurdiev.

The 32-year-old American then recorded back-to-back decision wins, stopping Christian Aguilera in the second and Jake Matthews in the third, before earning a points win over Michael Chiesa.

That set up a high profile showdown with another rising star, Belal Muhammad, and it proved to be a disappointing night for Brady as he was knocked out in the second round.

He has rallied since that loss though, following up a submission victory over Kelvin Gastelum with a dominant points win against Gilbert Burns.

Verdict

It is tough to write off Leon Edwards, but that loss to Belal Muhammad looms large over this one.

Sean Brady has a similar approach and the skills to adopt the same gameplan, so we would not be shocked to see him take down ‘Rocky’ repeatedly to claim the win on points.
