Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler Preview & Picks

Michael Chandler is backed to ruin Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback.

McGregor does not have the best gas tank and he is coming off a long lay-off that has seen him live the party lifestyle.

So if Chandler uses his grappling he can wear down the Irishman to the point where he can score a finish.

  • 18 of Michael Chandler’s 23 wins have come via stoppage
  • 4 of Michael Chandler’s 5 UFC fights have not gone the distance
  • All 6 of Conor McGregor’s career defeats have been via stoppage
  • Only 1 of Conor McGregor’s last 12 fights have gone the distance

Conor McGregor Form

Conor McGregor is a former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion with a 22-6 (19 KOs, 1 Sub) record.

McGregor became the UFC’s first major crossover star as he took the promotion by storm following his debut in April 2013.

He won a string of fights that culminated in a sensational 13-second knockout of the legendary Jose Aldo that ended the Brazilian’s featherweight dominance and earned him his first UFC title.

The 35-year-old Irishman’s streak was finally halted by a second-round submission loss to Nate Diaz in a non-title fight in March 2016, but he soon bounced back.

McGregor won the rematch via majority decision that summer, and later that year he became the first man in UFC history to hold titles in two different weight classes at the same time.

He knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the second round, but that would prove to be his last UFC outing for almost two years.

‘The Notorious’ crossed over to boxing for a huge fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr, and when he finally returned to the UFC in 2018 he started a run of three defeats in four fights.

McGregor was submitted by fierce rival Khabib Nurmagomedov in a lightweight title fight in October 2018.

He bounced back with a 40-second TKO victory over Donald Cerrone, only to then suffer a second-round knockout loss at the hands of Dustin Poirier.

That became back-to-back losses when he suffered a broken leg in the trilogy fight with Poirier, resulting in a first-round TKO defeat.

Michael Chandler Form

Michael Chandler is a former Bellator MMA lightweight champion with a professional record of 23-8 (11 KOs, 7 Subs).

Chandler made his name competing for the Bellator MMA promotion between September 2010 and August 2020.

He beat Eddie Alvarez via fourth-round submission to win the lightweight title in November 2011, and then went on to win his next three fights before losing the rematch via split decision.

The 38-year-old American lost his next two fights too, but he bounced back over the next three years with seven wins in eight fights.

Chandler’s sole defeat during that run came in a lightweight title fight, when an ankle injury he sustained in the first round forced the doctor to step in and wave it off.

He challenged for the 155lb crown one more time in May 2019, losing via first-round TKO to Patricio Pitbull, and after winning his next two fights he finally signed for the UFC.

The American marked his debut with a first-round TKO victory over Dan Hooker, securing a shot at the UFC lightweight title in only his second fight for the promotion.

Chandler lost that fight to Charles Oliveira by second-round TKO, and in his next bout he dropped a unanimous decision to Justin Gaethje.

He was able to avoid a third straight loss by knocking out Tony Ferguson in the second round, only to then get tapped out by Dustin Poirier in the third round last time out.

Verdict

If, and that is a big if, Chandler leans on his wrestling, he can earn the biggest scalp of his career.

He has a massive advantage on the mat and not only does McGregor have questionable cardio, he is also coming off a very long absence from the Octagon.
