Alex Pereira vs Jamahal Hill Preview & Picks
Alex Pereira is tipped to retain the UFC light-heavyweight title.
This fight is expected to play out solely on the feet and there are few better strikers than Pereira.
He has elite skills and fight-stopping power, so we expect ‘Poatan’ to get the job done inside the distance.
- Alex Pereira is 2-0 since moving up to light-heavyweight
- 7 of Alex Pereira’s 9 career victories have been via knockout
- 21 of Pereira’s 33 kickboxing wins came via knockout
- Jamahal Hill’s sole career defeat so far came by knockout
Alex Pereira Form
Alex Pereira is a former UFC middleweight champion and a current light-heavyweight champion with a professional record of 9-2 (7 KOs).
Pereira crossed over to MMA after a highly successful kickboxing career, and suffered an early setback as he lost his debut fight.
The 36-year-old Brazilian rebounded quickly and won three consecutive fights to earn himself a contract with the UFC.
He stopped Andreas Michailidis with strikes in the second round of his UFC debut, and backed that up with a decision win over Bruno Silva.
Pereira made it three-in-a-row inside the Octagon as he knocked out Sean Strickland in the first round, and that earned him a shot at then middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.
He had beaten Adesanya during his kickboxing career and stunned the dominant champion by beating him again in their UFC title fight, knocking out ‘The Last Stylebender’ in the final round.
‘Poatan’ lost the rematch via second-round knockout though, and following that loss he moved up to light-heavyweight.
Pereira made a successful debut in his new weight class by edging Jan Blachowicz via split decision, earning himself a fight for the vacant title.
He then became a two-weight world champion by knockout out Jiri Prochazka in the second round last November.
Jamahal Hill Form
Jamahal Hill is the former light-heavyweight champion and the current #1 ranked contender with a professional record of 12-1 (7 KOs) with 1 No Contest.
Hill earned himself a spot in the UFC with a successful outing on Dana White’s Contenders Series in July 2019.
He then made a successful debut, beating Darko Stosic by unanimous decision, only to see his second outing be turned into a No Contest due to a failed drug test.
The 32-year-old American bounced back with a second-round knockout of Ovince Saint Preux later that year, but failed to follow that up as he was knocked out in the first round by Paul Craig.
Hill avoided back-to-back defeats in the best possible fashion though, knocking out Jimmy Crute in 48 seconds.
He then stopped Johnny Walker in the first round of their fight, before knockout out Thiago Santos in the fourth round.
That earned ‘Sweet Dreams’ a shot at the vacant light-heavyweight title in early 2023, and he took his big shot.
Hill recorded a unanimous decision victory over Glover Teixeira to become a UFC champion for the first time, but an injury forced him to vacate the belt later that year.
Verdict
Jamahal Hill is a dangerous striker, but he is not on Alex Pereira’s level technically.
‘Poatan’ has an elite skillset and boasts fight-ending power, so we are expecting a successful defence for the champion.
