Chicago Cubs Form

Chicago enter this series finale on the back of a victory over San Diego that improved their record to 12-8.

The Cubs lost back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Dodgers to start the season, and then split a four-game series in Arizona when they returned from Japan.

That was followed by a five-game win streak as they finally found some consistency, sweeping the Athletics with 18-3, 7-4 and 10-2 wins before beating San Diego 3-1 and 7-1.

Chicago lost the series finale with the Padres, 8-7, but bounced back to win two of their three meetings with both Texas (7-0, 10-6, 2-6) and the Dodgers (0-3, 16-0, 4-2).

The Cubs then dropped the series opened in San Diego, 10-4, only to rebound last night with a 2-1 victory over the Padres.

San Diego Padres Form

San Diego go into this matchup looking to avenge last night's loss to Chicago, which was only their fourth defeat of the season so far.

The Padres raced out of the blocks as they won their first seven games, sweeping both Atlanta, 7-4, 4-3, 1-0 and 5-0, and Cleveland, 7-2, 7-0 and 5-2.

Their perfect start was ended by 3-1 and 7-1 losses to the Cubs, but they took the final meeting 8-7 and then moved on to sandwich a 10-4 loss to the Athletics with 5-4 and 2-1 victories.

San Diego backed up those wins when they returned home to sweep Colorado with 8-0, 2-0 and 6-0 victories, and they then made it four-in-a-row by winning the series opener with the Cubs, 10-4.

The Padres failed to win five straight games though, as they were beaten 2-1 by the Cubs last night.

Verdict

Chicago avenged the series-opening defeat, but we are not expecting back-to-back wins for the Cubs.

San Diego have been in great form since the season started and Nick Pivetta already has a couple of shutouts on his record, so we are backing the Padres to bounce back.
