Wells Fargo Championship Preview & Picks - Best PGA Tour Picks This Week
- The Wells Fargo Championship takes place between May 5-8
- The tournament takes place at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Maryland
- Our 4 selections who can win the title
The PGA Tour moves to the greens of TPC Potomac for the first time, with a host of elite players competing to be named the victor of the Wells Fargo Championship. Who will walk away with the honours?
Rory McIlroy returns to defend his title and will attempt to win this tournament for a record fourth time.
Nine past major winners who will tee off on Thursday include Jason Day, Lucas Glover, Keegan Bradley, Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland, Stewart Cink, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed and Charl Schwartzel.
These are our selections that could win the title this weekend.
Rory Mcllroy
Rory McIlroy made a charge up the field at the Masters with a record-equalling final round score of 64 to finish sole second behind Scott Scheffler, achieving his best-ever finish at Augusta National.
Before that, the world's number seven ranked golfer finished T12 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, 3rd at the Dubai Desert Classic, T10 at the Genesis Invitational, T13 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T33 at the Players Championship.
The Northern Irishman's only blemish is when he missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open.
McIlroy has won this event three times in 2010, 2015 and last year. Additionally, he was runner-up in 2012. Can he claim another Wells Fargo Championship this weekend?
Corey Connors
Corey Connors continued to challenge for his second PGA Tour title of his career when he placed T12 overall at the RBC Heritage.
The week before, the Canadian came in T6 at the Masters, his best finish around the greens of Augusta National.
Before those two results, the 30-year-old had finishes of T38 at the Phoenix Open, 11th Sony Open, T11 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T26 at the Players Championship, a 3rd place at the WGC Dell Technologies World Match Play and T35 at the Valero Texas Open.
Connors does not have a fantastic record at the Wells Fargo Championship, missing the cut in 2015, finishing T42 in 2018 and T43 last year.
Connors brings excellent form into this tournament and will fancy his chances to win in Maryland.
Matt Fitzpatrick
Matt Fitzpatrick is still without a PGA Tour title in his career, but he has had some excellent results in recent months.
He has played eight tournaments in 2022, missing the cut twice. Otherwise, his lowest finish is T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.
The Englishman placed T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T10 at the Phoenix Open, T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T5 at the Valspar Championship at T14 at the Masters.
The world number 25 ranked golfer is making his debut at the Wells Fargo Championship and has had four top-ten places this year. Can he get over the finish line to win this first tournament on the PGA Tour?
Cameron Young
Cameron Young is still fresh on the PGA Tour, having plied most of his trade on the Korn Ferry Tour, but he has shown that he can mix it with the best players in the world.
The 24-year-old American has had two great results placing T2 at the Genesis Invitational and T3 at the RBC Heritage.
Other notable finishes are T20 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T26 at the Phoenix Open, T16 at the Honda Classic and T13 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Like Fitzpatrick, he will be making his debut at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Young has done little wrong since joining the PGA Tour and is the long-shot value bet for this weekend around the greens at TPC Potomac.
Verdict
McIlroy has a great chance to win back-to-back Wells Fargo Championships.
Connors has been ultra-consistent this year and can be in the mix in Maryland.
Fitzpatrick is in great touch and can challenge for victory this weekend.
Young has good form and can upset the field to capture his maiden PGA Tour title of his career.
