LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster Preview & Picks
The LIV Golf Invitational remains in the USA for the third leg of the series, with the players contesting for the title at the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. Who will be the first-time winner of the tournament?

The LIV Golf Invitational Series continues to draw controversy after Henrik Stenson was stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy when he confirmed he was joining the breakaway tour.

Four new players have joined the LIV Golf International Series, including Charles Howell III, Jason Kokrak, Paul Casey and Stenson.

Ten past Major winners will be in the lineup, including Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel and Stenson.

These are our selections for the title this weekend.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson produced excellent results in this first six PGA Tour starts in 2022, including three top ten places.

He finished T25 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T8 at the Saudi International, MC at the Genesis Invitational, T9 at the Players Championship, T39 at the Valspar Championship and fourth at the WGC Dell Technologies.

The 38-year-old played well at the Masters, coming in T12, but his form dipped when he missed the cut at the RBC Heritage, finished T59 at the AT&T Byron Nelson and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

Johnson was solid at the US Open, finishing T24 and placing a credible T6 at the 150th Open Championship.

The world's number 17th ranked golfer placed 8th in London and T3 in Portland in the two LIV Golf Invitational tournaments he has played.

Johnson has strong claims to win this event after his recent performances. Can he do it?

Abraham Ancer

Abraham Ancer had mediocre to excellent results in his first nine appearances on the PGA Tour for 2022, finishing T35 at the Tournament of Champions, MC, T40, T8 at the Saudi International, T43, T39, T33 at the Players Championship, MC and T5 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

The 31-year-old golfer struggled in his subsequent three starts, finishing MC, T42 at the Mexico Open, and T56 but bounced back with an excellent T9 at the PGA Championship.

The world's 22nd-ranked golfer failed at the Charles Schwab Challenge, missing the cut but finished T32 at the Memorial Tournament and placed T11 at the recent 150th Open Championship.

The Mexican finished T11 at the LIV Golf Invitational Series in Portland.

Ancer has had three top-10 places this year and two top-15 finishes in the last two starts and will be challenging for the trophy in New Jersey this weekend.

Talor Gooch

Talor Gooch's first six PGA Tour tournaments of 2022 were solid, with results of T15 at the Tournament of Champions, T27 at the Sony Open, MC at the American Express, T20 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T26 at the Phoenix Open and MC at the Genesis Invitational.

He then produced an excellent T7 place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but missed the cut at the Players Championship. However, he bounced back with a T18 finish at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play and T14 at the Masters.

The American was poor to good in his subsequent five events, MC at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T20 PGA Championship, T27 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, MC at US Open and T34 at the 150th Open Championship.

The 30-year-old has featured in both LIV Golf Invitational tournaments, placing ninth in London and seventh in Portland.

Gooch has had three top-10 places and five top-20 finishes this year, and his consistency can be rewarded with victory at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster this weekend.

Charles Howell III

Charles Howell III finished T36 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T25 at the American Express, MC at the Phoenix Open, MC at the Honda Classic and T32 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in his first five PGA Tour tournaments for 2022.

The American golfer produced a top finish at the Valero Texas Open, coming T4 overall. He could not maintain that level of play as he missed the cut at the RBC Heritage, finished T33 at the Mexico Open and missed the cut again when contesting the AT&T Byron Nelson.

The 43-year-old has looked solid in his following three tournaments, placing T18 at the Memorial Tournament, T35 at the Travelers Championship and T13 at the John Deere Classic.

He is making his debut in the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Howell III is the long-shot pick for this weekend as he brings a wealth of experience to the table and has played well in recent starts.

Format

An invitational field of 48 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $120,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of the traditional 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.

A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 12 four-man team format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Johnson has been in great touch lately and will fancy his chances to come out on top at the Trump National Golf Club.

Ancer can convert his recent form into a winning performance this weekend.

Gooch has been consistent throughout the year and could get over the finish line come Sunday.

Howell III has played solid golf lately and is the long-shot value bet in Bedminster.
