The FedEx Cup playoffs start with the first of three tournaments at TPC Southwind this weekend, but who will leave Tennessee with the FedEx St. Jude Championship title?
Lucas Glover will not be back to defend his title after a playoff victory over Patrick Cantlay in 2023.
Past and present major winners in the field include Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Adam Scott, and Justin Thomas.
These are our selections that could win the title this weekend.
Tommy Fleetwood
Tommy Fleetwood has been thereabouts on the PGA Tour lately, placing T13 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T26 at the PGA Championship, T21 at the RBC Canadian Open, T20 at the Memorial Tournament and T16 at the U.S. Open.
He was then 15th at the Travelers Championship, T34 at the Genesis Scottish Open and MC at the Open Championship before finishing 2nd at the recent Paris Olympics.
Other notable results achieved by Fleetwood this season include winning the Dubai Invitational and finishing T14 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T10 at the Genesis Invitational, T7 at the Valero Texas Open and T3 at the Masters.
The world's 11th-ranked player has made four appearances at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, placing T20 in 2018, T43 in 2019, T44 in 2020 and T3 in 2023.
Fleetwood went close to winning gold at the recent Olympic Games and has the form to go all the way in Tennessee.
Patrick Cantlay
Patrick Cantlay showed promising signs of winning a title at the start of his PGA Tour season, placing T12 at the Sentry, T52 at the American Express, T56 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T11 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T4 at the Genesis Invitational.
Cantlay followed that with T36 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T68 at the Players Championship, T22 at the Masters, T3 at the RBC Heritage and T23 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Cantlay lacked consistency in his following three events, finishing T29 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T53 at the PGA Championship and MC at the Memorial Tournament before returning to form with T3 at the U.S. Open, T5 at the Travelers Championship and T25 at the Open Championship.
The world's eighth-ranked golfer's previous results at the FedEx St. Jude Championship have been excellent, placing T10 in 2017, T8 in 2018, T12 in 2019, MC in 2020, T11 in 2021, T57 in 2022 and 2nd in 2023.
Cantlay appears to have turned the corner and will look to secure his first PGA Tour victory in two years.
Tony Finau
Tony Finau has been in solid touch on the PGA Tour lately, placing T18 at the PGA Championship, T17 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T8 at the Memorial Tournament, T3 at the U.S. Open, T5 at the Travelers Championship, MC at the Open Championship and T12 at the 3M Open.
Other prominent performances by Finau this season include finishing T25 at the American Express, T6 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T19 at the Genesis Invitational, T13 at the Mexico Open, T2 at the Texas Children's Houston Open, T55 at the Masters and T12 at the RBC Heritage.
The six-time PGA Tour winner has compiled an impressive record at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, with results of T54 in 2017, 2nd in 2018, T30 in 2019, MC in 2020, victory in 2021, T5 in 2022, and 64th in 2023.
Finau will start confidently to emerge as the winner, as he has been playing well lately and has previously achieved excellent results at this tournament.
Sungjae Im
Sungjae Im has been in great shape on the PGA Tour during the past three months, with results of T12 at the RBC Heritage, victory at the Woori Financial Group Championship (Korean Tour), T4 at the Wells Fargo Championship, MC at the PGA Championship, T9 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T8 at the Memorial Tournament and MC at the U.S. Open.
Additionally, Im placed T3 at the Travelers Championship, T12 at the John Deere Classic, T4 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T7 at the Open Championship and T41 at the recent Wyndham Championship.
Additional results achieved by Im this season include finishing T5 at the Sentry, T25 at the American Express and T18 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The Korean golfer has featured five times at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, placing T38 in 2019, MC in 2020, T16 in 2021, 12th in 2022 and T6 in 2023.
Im has been knocking hard and could cause an upset victory in Memphis this weekend.
Verdict
Cantlay has been thereabouts lately and came close to winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship last year.
Finau can convert his consistent results into a winning one at TPC Southwind come Sunday.
Im has been playing well lately and is the long-shot value bet in Tennessee this weekend.
