  • The Farmers Insurance Open takes place between 26-29 January, 2022
  • The tournament takes place at Torrey Pines Golf Course, California
  • Our four golfers who can win the title

An elite field takes to the greens of the Torrey Pines golf course for the Farmers Insurance Open, the latest round of the PGA Tour.

Patrick Reed is back in San Diego to defend his title after his win in 2021, with this year's event taking place from Wednesday, January 26 to Saturday, January 29.

Present and past major winners who will start on Wednesday include Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Dufner, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

Players will tee off on the North and South Courses at Torrey Pines for rounds one and two. After the 36-hole cut, the final two rounds will be played on the South Course.

These are our four selections that could win this weekend.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm returns to the course where he won the first major title of his career and became the first Spaniard to lift the US Open trophy.

Rahm followed up his runner-up place at the Tournament of Champions at the start of this month with a T14 finish at The American Express tournament last weekend.

Rahm was victorious at this tournament in 2017. He placed T5 in 2019, was a runner-up in 2020 and finished T7 in 2021. He plays well on this golf course.

The world number one golfer comes into this event as the firm favorite to win his second Farmers Insurance Open title and his third overall at Torrey Pines.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas started 2022 with a T5 finish at the Tournament of Champions two weeks ago.

Thomas won the Players Championship in March of 2021. After that win, he struggled with just two top 20 results in his next eight starts on the PGA Tour.

Towards the latter end of last year, the American returned to form with finishes of T4, T22, 4, T18, 3 and T5 at the Hero World Challenge last December.

Thomas placed T10 at this event in 2014 and missed the cut the following year. From 2016 to 2021, he did not play in the Farmers Insurance Open. At the US Open last year, Thomas finished T19 on the Torrey Pines course.

Daniel Berger

Daniel Berger had an excellent 2021 on the PGA Tour. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and had three top-five places and seven top-10 finishes.

The American has a poor record at this event. His best result has been T24 in 2015 before missing the cut in his next three starts at the Farmers Insurance Open.

However, at the 2021 US Open, played at Torrey Pines, Berger finished T7 overall.

Berger's last seven PGA Tour tournament starts have yielded results of T8, T5, T56, T26, T8, T7 and T5 at the recent Sentry Tournament of Champions.

He comes into this tournament on the back of five top-10 finishes and should be in the frame this weekend.

Mackenzie Hughes

Mackenzie Hughes comes into this PGA event fresh having not played since his runner-up finish at the RSM Classic last November.

Other notable finishes from 2021 include a T9, T15, T14, T6, and T4 at the Zozo Championship in Japan.

The Canadian does not boast a good record at the Farmers Insurance Open. In his previous five starts, he has finished T54, Cut, T29, Cut and Cut in 2021.

However, Hughes placed T15 at Torrey Pines at the US Open in 2021 and is a long-shot pick for this tournament if able to replicate that form.

Verdict

Rahm particularly enjoys playing on this golf course and is the favorite for the title.

Thomas has been threatening to win and can be in this mix this weekend.

Berger has been knocking on the door of late to win and offers an excellent each-way bet.

Hughes can challenge for victory and is a worthy long-shot value bet at Torrey Pines.
