Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou Preview & Picks
Tyson Fury is tipped to knock out Francis Ngannou.
Ngannou may be a big-hitter, but so was Deontay Wilder and Fury dismantled him repeatedly.
The WBC champion’s superior boxing skills and experience is backed to overwhelm Ngannou.
- Tyson Fury has an unbeaten 33-0-1 record
- 5 of Tyson Fury’s last 6 wins have come by KO/TKO
- 3 of Fury’s last 4 KO wins have come after round 6
- Francis Ngannou is making his boxing debut
Tyson Fury Form
Tyson Fury is the WBC world heavyweight champion with a record of 33-0-1 (24 KOs).
Fury became world heavyweight champion for the first time in November 2015 when he beat Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision.
He failed to make a defence of the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO and Ring titles though, spending almost three years out of the ring in the wake of that victory over Klitschko.
‘The Gypsy King’ ended his exile in 2018 though, beating Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta to set up a meeting with then-WBC champion, Deontay Wilder.
Despite dominating the contest prior to a late knockdown, Fury was denied victory as the judges rendered the fight a split decision draw.
Instead of taking on an immediate rematch, he first knocked out Tom Schwarz in two rounds before beating Otto Wallin via unanimous decision.
That set up the second meeting with Wilder, and on that night Fury schooled him before knocking him out in the seventh round.
The British heavyweight then won the trilogy fight via 11th round stoppage, before moving on to fights with domestic rivals last year.
Fury knocked out Dillian Whyte in the sixth round out at Wembley, before stopping Derek Chisora in the 10th at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Francis Ngannou Form
Francis Ngannou is a former UFC heavyweight champion with a professional MMA record of 17-3 (12 KOs, 4 Subs).
Ngannou made an immediate impression after debuting in the UFC in December 2015, quickly climbing the heavyweight ladder.
He knocked out former champion Andrei Arlovski in 92 seconds in January 2017, and later that year took just 102 seconds to stop MMA legend Alistair Overeem.
That earned ‘The Predator’ a shot at the UFC title, but he was outclassed by Stipe Miocic on the night as he dropped a decision.
Seemingly ‘gun-shy’ from that loss, Ngannou then suffered an uninspiring decision defeat to Derrick Lewis.
The 36-year-old face heavy criticism over that performance, but soon got back to his best as he surged to the top of the heavyweight division with a string of stoppage wins.
He knocked out Curtis Blaydes in 45 seconds to get back on track, and then took only 26 seconds to finish former champion Cain Velasquez.
Ngannou stopped ex-champion Junior Dos Santos in 1:11 to keep his run going, and then took just 20 seconds to take out Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
That earned him a rematch with Miocic for the title in March 2021, and this time the Cameroonian took his chance, knocking out the champion in the second round.
He then made one successful defence of the heavyweight title, beating Ciryl Gane by unanimous decision, before leaving the UFC when his contract expired.
Verdict
Some will say Francis Ngannou has a puncher’s chance – he does not.
He is nowhere near Tyson Fury’s level as a professional boxer, so we expect similar scenes to Fury’s last two fights with Deontay Wilder.
We are backing the boxing champion to wear down and break down Ngannou, before knocking him out.
