Teofimo Lopez vs Arnold Barboza Jr Preview & Picks

Teofimo Lopez is tipped to retain his WBO world title via decision.

Lopez is highly skilled and pairs that with high fight IQ, as evidenced by wins over Lomachenko and Taylor.

Arnold Barboza Jr, on the other hand, is a little more crude in his approach, and he lacks the punching power to trouble Lopez and make him think twice about his attacks.

  • Teofimo Lopez is on a 5-fight win streak
  • 6 of Teofimo Lopez’s last 7 fights have gone the distance
  • Teofimo Lopez has not knocked out an opponent since August 2022
  • 8 of Arnold Barboza Jr’s last 9 fights have gone the distance

Teofimo Lopez Form

Teofimo Lopez is the reigning WBO light-welterweight champion with a professional record of 21-1 (13 KOs).

Lopez debuted back in November 2016 and just over three years later he became a world champion for the first time.

The 27-year-old New Yorker knocked out Richard Commey in the second round to claim the IBF lightweight crown, setting up a big unification clash with Vasyl Lomachenko.

He took his big chance and was able to add the WBA (Super), WBO and Ring Magazine titles with a unanimous decision victory over ‘Loma’.

Lopez lost those belts in his next defence, losing via split decision to George Kambosos Jr, but he has rebounded from that setback in November 2021.

‘The Takeover’ got back to winning ways with a seventh-round knockout of Pedro Campa, and backed that up with a decision victory over Sandor Martin.

Lopez then became a two-weight world champion in June 2023 as he beat Josh Taylor on points to win the WBO and Ring Magazine light-welterweight titles.

He successfully defended those crowns twice in 2024, beating both Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett via unanimous decision.

Arnold Barboza Jr Form

Arnold Barboza Jr is the interim WBO light-welterweight champion with an unbeaten professional record of 32-0 (11 KOs).

Barboza Jr made his professional debut back in June 2023 and has gone on to hold a number of minor titles during his career.

However, despite having 32 fights on his record it is only in the past 18 months that he has fought some truly notable opposition.

The 33-year-old Californian began 2024 with a split decision victory over Sean McComb to retain the WBO inter-continental belt.

Barboza Jr then beat Jose Ramirez via unanimous decision to earn himself a fight for the interim WBO world title.

The American travelled into ‘enemy territory’ for the fight, but left with the belt thanks to a split decision victory over Jack Catterall.

Verdict

Teofimo Lopez solved the Lomachenko puzzle and had too much for Taylor in their fight.

He should prove to be too smart and too talented for Arnold Barboza Jr, resulting in a points victory.
