Shakur Stevenson vs Artem Harutyunyan Preview & Picks

Shakur Stevenson is backed to retain his WBC lightweight title on points.

Unbeaten Stevenson is clearly the better boxer and is expected to outclass Artem Harutyunyan over 12 rounds.

  • 5 of Stevenson’s last 7 wins have been via decision
  • Artem Harutyunyan lost his last fight
  • Harutyunyan’s only career defeat was on points

Shakur Stevenson Form

Shakur Stevenson is the WBC lightweight champion with a professional record of 21-0 (10 KOs).

Stevenson became a world champion for the first time in his career when he beat Joet Gonzalez on points for the vacant WBO featherweight title in October 2019.

He quickly vacated the title to move up to super-featherweight, and in his first outing in the new weight class he stopped Felix Caraballo in the sixth round.

The 27-year-old American followed that up with a decision win over Toka Khan Clary, earning him an interim title fight.

Stevenson beat Jeremiah Nakathila on points to win the belt in June 2021, and several months later he was crowned full champion thanks to a 10th round knockout of Jamel Herring.

He added the WBC and Ring Magazine titles in his first outing of 2022 when he beat Oscar Valdez via unanimous decision.

The American then made a successful defence of those crowns, beating Robson Conceicao on points later that year.

Stevenson moved up to lightweight after that fight and stopped Shuichiro Yoshino in the sixth round of a WBC eliminator, securing a shot at the belt last November.

He then became a three-weight world champion by beating Edwin De Los Santos by decision to claim the vacant title.

Artem Harutyunyan Form

Artem Harutyunyan enters this fight on the back of his career loss, which has left him with a record of 12-1 (7 KOs).

Harutyunyan debuted in 2017 and fought exclusively in Germany for several years as he picked up minor titles.

He won the IBO international light-welterweight title in June 2019 by beating Hugo Alfredo Santillan on points.

The 33-year-old German successfully defended that belt twice, beating Islam Dumanov by majority decision and Miguel Cesario Antin by fourth-round TKO.

Harutyunyan then claimed the WBA international lightweight title in April 2021 courtesy of a split decision win over Vladyslav Melnyk.

He then claimed the vacant WBC international belt with a fifth-round knockout of Samuel Molina, before besting Humberto Galindo via unanimous decision in his one defence.

The German fighter’s record stood at 12-0 heading into 2023, but he suffered his first loss in his only outing of last year – a unanimous decision defeat to Frank Martin.

Verdict

Shakur Stevenson continues to stack up wins and recently they have tended to come via the judges.

Artem Harutyunyan has never been knocked out, so everything points to this being another decision win for the champion.
