Gervonta Davis is tipped to retain his WBA lightweight title via knockout.
Lamont Roach is a credible contender, but Davis’ variety of punches and brutal power are expected to break down the challenger and lead to a finish.
- Gervonta Davis has a 30-0 professional record
- 28 of Gervonta Davis’ 30 professional victories have come via knockout
- 5 of Gervonta Davis’ last 6 fights have at least reached the 7th round
Gervonta Davis Form
Gervonta Davis is the defending WBA world lightweight champion with a perfect professional record of 30-0 (28 KOs).
Davis made his professional boxing debut in February 2013 and quickly climbed the ladder with a string of quickfire knockout wins.
He became a world champion for the first time in January 2017 when he knocked out Jose Pedraza in the seventh round to claim the IBF super-featherweight crown.
‘Tank’ then retained that title with a third-round knockout of Liam Walsh, before stopping Francisco Fonseca in the eighth round despite failing to make weight.
That weight failure cost him the title, but he became a world champion again in his very next fight when he floored Jesus Cuellar in the third to win the WBA (Super) title.
From there Davis retained the belt by stopping Hugo Ruiz in one and Ricardo Nunez in two, before giving up the title to move up to lightweight.
The 30-year-old American marked his debut at this weight with a 12th round knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa, before dropping back down to super-featherweigh to stop Leo Santa Cruz in the sixth for the WBA title.
That proved to be his final outing at the weight as he moved to lightweight and beat Mario Barrios on points to claim the WBA (Regular) title.
Davis made three successful defences, out-pointing Isaac Cruz before stopping Rolando Romero in the sixth round and Hector Garcia in the ninth.
He then knocked out Ryan Garcia in the seventh, and after being installed as the new WBA lightweight champion he made a successful defence by stopping Frank Martin in the 8th.
Lamont Roach Form
Lamont Roach is the current WBA world super-featherweight champion with a career record of 25-1 (10 KOs) and 1 draw.
Roach made his professional boxing debut in April 2014 and won the first 16 fights of his career, before going to a draw with Orlando Cruz in a fight for a minor title.
He rebounded in his next fight with a six-round stoppage of Deivis Julio Bassa, and he then recorded points wins over both Alberto Mercado and Jonathan Oquendo.
That earned the 29-year-old American his first world title shot, but he came up short as he dropped a decision to Jamel Herring in November 2019.
Roach bounced back quickly with a couple of swift stoppage wins, knockout out Neil John Tabanao in the third round and Daniel Rosas in the second.
‘The Reaper’ then backed those up with a couple of unanimous decision successes as he beat Rene Alvarado and Angel Rodriguez.
That secured another world super-featherweight title fight for the American, and this time he took his shot in 2023 as he edged Hector Luis Garcia by split decision.
Roach then made one defence of that belt last year, knocking out Feargal McCrory in the eighth round.
Verdict
Lamont Roach is the more technical fighter so we do expect him to enjoy some early success.
However, Gervonta Davis, as always, is expected to make the necessary adjustments, and when he does he is likely to take over the contest and showcase his stopping power yet again.
