Deontay Wilder vs Zhilei Zhang Preview & Picks
Zhilei Zhang is backed to win this heavyweight fight via knockout.
Deontay Wilder has not looked the same in recent fights, and Zhang has the power to put him away.
Neither fighter has a great gas tank either, so we expect this one to be over inside six rounds.
- Zhilei Zhang has won 4 of his last 7 fights
- 14 of Zhang’s last 15 wins have come via KO/TKO
- Deontay Wilder has lost 3 of his last 4 fights
- 2 of Deontay Wilder’s 3 losses have been by KO
Deontay Wilder Form
Deontay Wilder is a former WBC world heavyweight champion with a professional record of 43-3-1 (42 KOs).
Wilder became a world champion back in January 2015 when he beat Bermaine Stiverne via unanimous decision to claim the WBC title.
He went on to make seven successful defences of his crown, all via stoppage, before his controversial split decision draw with Tyson Fury in December 2018.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ got back to winning ways several months later when he knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the first round, and he then closed out 2019 by stopping Luis Ortiz in the seventh round.
That set up a rematch with Fury in February 2020, and this time there was no controversy as Wilder was outclassed and knocked out in the seventh round.
The 38-year-old American faced Fury in a trilogy fight in his next outing in October 2021, and he once again came out on the losing end as he was knocked out in the 11th round.
Wilder got back to winning ways in October 2022, taking out Robert Helenius in the first round, but he failed to back that up.
In his sole outing of 2023, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ dropped a unanimous decision to another former world heavyweight champion, Joseph Parker.
Zhilei Zhang Form
Zhilei Zhang is a former interim WBO heavyweight champion with a career record of 21-5-1 (21 KOs).
Zhang won the first 22 fights of his professional career, knocking out a string of opponents to establish himself as one of the top fighters coming out of the Orient.
His perfect record received its first blemish in February 2021 when he went to a majority decision draw with Jerry Forrest, but he bounced back quickly.
‘Big Bang’ returned to winning ways with a second-round knockout of Craig Lewis, and he then took out Scott Alexander in the first round.
Zhang failed to make it three wins in a row though, as he lost a unanimous decision to Filip Hrgovic.
Despite that loss his next outing saw him fight for the interim WBO title in April 2023, and he claimed the title belt by knocking out Joe Joyce in the sixth round.
Later that year the two men fought again, and the 41-year-old Chinese fighter proved the first win was no fluke, knocking out Joyce in the third round.
However, Zhang was unable to make a second successful defence of his interim crown, losing a majority decision to Joseph Parker in March of this year.
Verdict
This heavyweight fight features two men who have the ability to end it in the blink of an eye.
We lean towards Zhang – he is coming into this fight on the back of a loss, but his last couple of wins were super impressive.
Deontay Wilder, on the other hand, looks like he may have been broken by those losses to Tyson Fury.
