Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull Preview & Picks

Canelo Alvarez is tipped to add another world super-middleweight title via knockout.

William Scull is a champion, but he lacks punching power and experience when it comes to fighting at the top level.

Alvarez is likely to scout Scull for the first few rounds and then break him down for the stoppage.

  • Canelo Alvarez is unbeaten at super-middleweight
  • 11 of Canelo Alvarez’s last 12 fights have gone at least 8 rounds
  • 4 of Canelo Alvarez’s last 6 stoppage wins have ended in rounds 7-12

Canelo Alvarez Form

Canelo Alvarez is the reigning WBA (Super), WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine world super-middleweight champion with a career record of 62-2 (39 KOs) and 2 draws.

Alvarez has fought a who’s who of fighters over the years, amassing a huge collection of world titles in multiple weight classes.

His bid to become a two-time light-heavyweight champion ended in failure in May 2022 when he lost to Dmitriy Bivol by decision, but he has rebounded with five straight victories.

The 34-year-old Mexican responded to that loss by retaining his super-middleweight titles with a decision win over long-time rival Gennady Golovkin.

Alvarez then made two successful defences in 2023, out-pointing both John Ryder and Jermell Charlo over 12 rounds.

He then fought twice more in 2024, enjoying further successful defences of his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine crowns.

Canelo first beat Jaime Munguia on points in his traditional outing around the Mexican public holiday, Cinco de Mayo.

He then claimed a unanimous decision victory over Edgar Berlanga in his annual September fight around Mexican Independence Day.

William Scull Form

William Scull is the reigning IBF super-middleweight champion with an unbeaten professional record of 23-0 (9 KOs).

Despite being born in Cuba, Scull has spent the last several years fighting almost exclusively in Germany.

The 32-year-old claimed minor IBO and IBF titles in 2021 as he fought three times that year, winning once on points and twice via knockout.

He first out-pointed Gino Kanters over 12 rounds, before recording second-round knockout victories over Dragan Lepei and Deneb Diaz.

Scull then fought twice in 2022, beating Evgeny Shvedenko and Abel Nicolas Adriel, before out-pointing Cristian Fabian Rios in his only outing of 2023.

‘El Indomable’ then claimed an eight-round decision win over Sean Hemphill in his Las Vegas debut in May 2024.

That earned Scull a fight for the vacant IBF super-middleweight world title last October, and he took his big chance as he beat Vladimir Shishkin in points.

Verdict

This feels very much like another cherry-picked opponent for Canelo Alvarez.

He is simply the better fighter in all areas and William Scull lacks the punching power to pose a real threat, so we expect to see Canelo work him over before recording the stoppage.
