Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga Preview & Picks

Canelo Alvarez is tipped to retain his world super-middleweight titles by knockout.

Edgar Berlanga is unbeaten, but he has never fought an opponent anywhere near Canelo’s quality.

Alvarez’s fight IQ and skills will be tough much for Berlanga as he scores a stoppage win.

  • Canelo Alvarez is 9-0 when fighting at super-middleweight
  • 9 of Canelo Alvarez’s last 11 fights have gone over 8.5 rounds
  • 4 of Alvarez’s last 6 stoppage wins have come in round 7 or later
  • 4 of Edgar Berlanga’s last 5 fights have gone over 8.5 rounds

Canelo Alvarez Form

Canelo Alvarez is the reigning unified super-middleweight world champion with a professional record of 61-2-2 (39 KOs).

Alvarez moved up to this division after successful unifying world middleweight titles with a decision win over Gennady Golovkin in September 2018, and in his debut he stopped Rocky Fielding in the third round.

He then briefly moved down to middleweight to beat Daniel Jacobs on points to unify four world titles, before going up to light-heavyweight to knock out WBO champion Sergey Kovalev in the 11th.

Canelo returned to the super-middleweight division after those two victories and successfully retained his WBA (Super), WBC and Ring Magazine titles with a unanimous decision win over Callum Smith.

He then successfully defended those titles by stopping Avni Yildirim in the third round, before adding the WBO belt with an eighth round stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders.

That left Alvarez needing one more title to become the undisputed champion at super-middleweight and he earned that crown in November 2021 when he took out IBF champion Caleb Plant in the 11th round.

Canelo then attempted to become a light-heavyweight champion for the second time when he challenged Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, but his quest ended in failure as he suffered his first defeat since the decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr in September 2013.

Alvarez has fought exclusively in the super-middleweight division since that loss, and he has made four successful defences of his world titles.

He settled his trilogy with Gennady Golovkin with a unanimous decision win, and followed that up with further decision victories over John Ryder, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia.

Edgar Berlanga Form

Edgar Berlanga enters this world title fight boasting an unbeaten professional record of 22-0 (17 KOs).

Berlanga debuted in April 2017 and made light work of his first 16 fights, stopping every single one of his opponents in the first round.

His streak of quick stoppages ended in April 2021 when he went the distance with Demond Nicholson, winning via unanimous decision.

He then beat Steve Rolls on points before besting Roamer Alexis Angelo via decision in a controversial fight.

Berlanga attempted to bit the shoulder of his opponent during the bout and later joked he was “about to do a Mike Tyson”, referencing the former world heavyweight champion’s infamous moment when he bit the ear of Evander Holyfield.

His victory stood, but he was fined and suspended for six months in the wake of the incident.

The 27-year-old New Yorker finally returned to the ring in June of last year and claimed a unanimous decision win over Jason Quigley.

Berlanga then improved his professional record to 22-0 this past February when he took out Padraig McCrory in the sixth round.

Verdict

It is tough to do anything but back Canelo Alvarez to win this world super-middleweight title fight.

He is many levels above Edgar Berlanga and we expect him to break down the American before stopping him in the second half of the contest.
